China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) takes pride in having a history of over half a century of accepting international students since the 1950s. CUG has the aim to cultivate high-level, interdisciplinary and outstanding international students as well as friendly messengers of cultural exchanges.
Except for degree programs, visiting scholars programs, Chinese language training programs and summer school programs, CUG also works as the host institute of various international education program including Chinese Government Scholarship, Saudi Government Scholarship, Tanzania Government Scholarship and National Hanban Scholarship. Each year, nearly 1000 international students from more than 100 countries in the world come to CUG for study and academic exchanges. Joining CUG gives an opportunity to acquire professional knowledge, learn Chinese language, and experience Chinese culture. CUG is also a platform for students to get connected with peers from around the world, achieve multicultural understanding and establish a global vision.
Available Programs:
Undergraduate program: This program lasts 4-5 years. Students are required to complete all courses and fulfill the designated number of credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate and a bachelor's degree according to the regulations of the Degree Committee. Only full-time courses are offered.
Master's Program: A normal program lasts 2-3 years. Students are required to complete all courses and the designated number of credits. After completing a master's thesis and dissertation, successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate and a Master’s degree according to the regulations of the Degree Committee. Only full-time courses are offered.
Doctoral Program: The program is 3-4years. Students are required to complete all courses, fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, and complete a doctoral thesis and dissertation. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate for their doctoral degree according to the regulations of the Degree Committee. Only full-time courses are offered.
General Scholar Program: This program lasts one year. Students must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study at their own university. Available options are joining undergraduate courses in a related major or enhancing proficiency in Chinese language.
Senior Scholar Program: This program lasts one year. Students must have a master's degree or above. Senior Visiting Students are normally supervised by a professor in conducting research in a specific field. Upon graduation, students will receive a certificate of achievement. Students may be considered for an extension to the duration of study upon request.
Chinese Language Training Program: To satisfy international students’ needs for studying the Chinese language, and to enhance the world’s understanding of Chinese language and culture, China University of Geosciences has designed a Chinese language project for visiting students. The course is divided into semesters, each of which lasts 18 weeks; the spring semester is from February to June, and the fall semester is from September to January of the next year ( specific dates may be subject to change each year).
Short-term Programs: This program lasts one or two months during the summer vacation. Students are required to complete all indoor courses before beginning any field trips. All indoor courses are taught in English by CUG’s faculty members,and various field trips focus on geology, environmental sciences, hydrology, gemology, and engineering, management, sports and Chinese language.
Entrance Requirements:
Basic requirements: Applicants must be over the age of 18,non-Chinese citizens must have a valid passport covering the whole study period, and must abide by Chinese laws and regulations and respect Chinese social customs.
Academic requirements: Applicants must submit their highest degree and academic transcripts issued by a Chinese university or its overseas equivalent.
Physical requirements: Applicants must be in good physical and mental health, free from any serious or infectious diseases or severe physical handicaps.
Language requirements: Applicants who cannot meet the language standards must study Chinese in the International Education College for Chinese Language Studies for one year and obtain an HSK 4 Certificate before beginning the degree courses. When applying for English-taught study, those applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency.
Study period and Semesters:
A typical period of study for each program is as follows: 4-5 years for undergraduate degrees, 2-3 years for master's degrees, and 3-4 years for PhD degrees. The visiting students program lasts 0.5-1 year. Students may, in some cases, reduce or extend the duration of study upon application.
Chinese universities divide every academic year into spring and autumn semesters. The autumn semester begins in September and ends in January of the following year while the spring semester begins in February and ends in July. There is a winter and summer vacation every year. The winter vacation lasts 1 month. The summer vacation usually lasts 2 months.

For Scholarship Applicants:Applicants should visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua to submit a scholarship application online (Agency No.10491) and send a packet with two completed application documents to the Admission Office of CUG before the advertised deadline.
For Self-funded Applicants:Applicants should visit http://admission.cug.edu.cn, submit the application online and upload the required documents to the system before the deadline.
It takes approximately 4 to 5 weeks to receive a formal admission notice following online application. We may require you to provide additional material during the application process. If you are accepted, we will send you an official“Admission Notice", Visa Applicaton for Study in China (JW201/JW202) and other relevant documents.
